Seminar
Report on the Workin' Progress: A Comparative Study of several
of the Working breeds
March 2011
Despite the challenge of snow
and rain the VIDJSG held a very successful week-end 'WORKIN"
PROGRESS Seminar February 26/27/2011. Thanks to weatherproof
Albertans who add great dimensions and interesting dialogue
to our seminars, we hosted 45 judges and interested attendees.
All participants were given in-depth presentations from
very expert and passionate breeders.
The week-end began with a pot
luck dinner Friday night. To encourage every-one to relax
and settle into education mode each dining table held 'ice-beaker'
(hidden under the centerpiece) judging questions and encouraged
to discuss their responses with the entire group.
Saturday the group studied the 'hairy' breeds:
- Leonbergers - Presenters Cindy and Jurgen
Koppen and Mary Decher. Seelowen Leonbergers, Kennel von
Klingelberg Leonbergers.
- Newfoundlands - Presenters. Denise Castinguay,
Castanewfs Newfoundland.
- St Bernards- Presenter Tikki Smith.,
Lasqueti Saint Bernards ( Unfortunately Tikki was unable
to attend because of ferry cancellations but her presentation
was well received.
- Black Russian Terriers - Presenter Josh
Ried - Cerberus Black Russian Terriers
- Giant Schnauzer- Presenters Nola and
Jim Keay, Keay's Giant Schnauzers
Saturday evening, participants were able
to relax with French wine and a Chinese dinner. The VIDJSG
strongly believes good food encourages great conversations
between each other and breed presenters! Put another way
- we love to eat while we study!
Sunday was devoted to Molossian type breeds:
- Boxer - Presenter by Monica Pinsker,
Mephisto Boxers
- Dogue de Bordeaux - Presenter Peter Muth,
Chateau Rouge Reg'd
- Bullmastiff - Presenter Lynne Rehsler,
Banbury Bullmastiffs.
- Mastiff - Presenter Shannon Lowe, Resolute
Mastiff
Although the weather continued
to be miserable each breed was examined individually and
taken outside for gaiting and comparison with other breeds.
This provided an opportunity for everyone to enjoy lively
discussions on the similarities and differences of each
breed.
The VIDJSG would like to thank
Ms Virginia Lyne who acted as Moderator for the week-end.
Seminars become very enjoyable and educational when enthusiastic
people participate. We not only learned from our very knowledgeable
presenters but gained valuable insight during discussions
with our peers. Thank you to all who participated, especially
the Presenters and their helpers. We enjoyed a great weekend.
Sincerely
Margaret Jones
Chair VIDJSG
The VIDJSG would like to
thank the attendees of our last seminar, and the breed presenters
who made it all worthwhile!
